The e-cigarette device (Vype ePod1.0, Nicoventures Trading Ltd., Blackburn, UK) consists of a metallic outer device case, a printed circuit board to control the device, a lithium-ion rechargeable battery (350 mAh) and an e-cigarette cartridge (Fig. 1). The voltage ranges from 2.2 to 3.1 V and is not adjustable by the user. The device has dimensions (h × w × d) of 104.2 × 19.1 × 10.5 mm and a power output of 6.5 ± 0.5 W. The cartridges or pods consist of a plastic case holding the ceramic wick material and a flat metal heating element (NiCr, 0.8 –1.4-Ω resistance). Each pod is pre-filled with Vype e-liquid (1.9 mL) and is magnetically attached to the device.
Currently, e-cigarettes are not mentioned in the Illinois Smoke-free Illinois Act, which prohibits smoking in virtually all public places and workplaces, but some local ordinances do include e-cigarettes. E-cigarette aerosol is not harmless; it can contain harmful and potentially harmful substances, including nicotine and cancer-causing chemicals. While e-cigarettes typically have fewer chemicals than regular cigarettes, researchers found e-cigarettes present their own unique health risks and can increase the odds of chronic cough, phlegm, bronchitis, and asthma. Some cigarette smokers have replaced traditional smoking with electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) or vaping, thinking it is not as dangerous. There are significant negative health effects from smoking cigarettes such as cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart disease, birth defects, and other health problems relating to nearly every organ of the body.
It raises your blood pressure and spikes your adrenaline, which increases your heart rate and the likelihood of having a heart attack. E-cigarettes, Vapes and JUULs - What Schools Should Know Information on e-cigarettes, "vapes" and JUULs for schools to learn more about what they are, why kids use them and health risks. The Impact of E-Cigarettes on the Lung There's evolving evidence about the health risks and impact of e-cigarettes on the lungs. The National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine concluded there is "substantial evidence" that if a youth or young adult uses an e-cigarette, they are at increased risk of using traditional cigarettes.
They found that kids who used e-cigs were more likely than non-users to smoke cigarettes or other tobacco products over the next year. To study the short-term impacts of vaping, the researchers performed MRI exams on 31 healthy, non-smoking adults before and after vaping a nicotine-free e-cigarette. Comparing the pre- and post-MRI data, the single episode of vaping resulted in reduced blood flow and impaired endothelial function in the large (femoral) artery that supplies blood to the thigh and leg. The endothelium, which lines the inside surface of blood vessels, is essential to proper blood circulation. Once the endothelium is damaged, arteries thicken, and blood flow to the heart and the brain can be cut off, resulting in heart attack or stroke.
In this particular aspect, again the composition of the e-liquid varies significantly among different commercial brands [4, 35]. The most common and major components of e-liquids are PG or 1,2-propanediol, and glycerol or glycerine (propane-1,2,3-triol). Both types of compounds are used as humectants to prevent the e-liquid from drying out [2, 53] and are classified by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as "Generally Recognised as Safe" [54].
Here we address some of the common questions people ask about e-cigarettes. ENDS may be manufactured to look like conventional combusted cigarettes, cigars, or pipes. Larger devices, such as tank systems or mods, bear little or no resemblance to cigarettes.
Nicotine salts can be used in refill liquids and in cartridges for closed systems. In March 2019, the Secretariat of the WHO FCTC issued an Information Note which compiled all Conference of the Parties (COP) decisions related to e-cigarettes. Information on current e-cigarette regulation can also be found on relevant pages of government websites (see Relevant Links below). See this page for information on the situation in 2014, when there was little regulation in place.
E-cigarettes are not risk-free but are believed to cause less harm than smoking. They do not burn tobacco or produce tar or carbon monoxide — two of the most harmful parts of tobacco smoke. Smoking can raise your risk for periodontal disease or disease affecting the gums.
In e-cigarettes, tobacco combustion is replaced by e-liquid heating, leading some manufacturers to propose that e-cigarettes have less harmful respiratory effects than tobacco consumption. Other innovative features such as the adjustment of nicotine content and the choice of pleasant flavours have won over many users. Nevertheless, the safety of e-cigarette consumption and its potential as a smoking cessation method remain controversial due to limited evidence. Moreover, it has been reported that the heating process itself can lead to the formation of new decomposition compounds of questionable toxicity. Numerous in vivo and in vitro studies have been performed to better understand the impact of these new inhalable compounds on human health.
But with its plant-derived, additive-free formula and rigorous testing, this device from Tribe Tokes is one of the safest vape products for CBD lovers. Like the previous entries on our list, the BC5000 uses e-liquid that's free of diacetyl and vitamin E acetate. The gums may become swollen and bleed (gingivitis) and eventually begin to pull away from the teeth (periodontitis). Smoking also has an effect on insulin, making it more likely that you’ll develop insulin resistance. People who smoke cigarettes have a 30% to 40% greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes and its complications. Smoking can increase the risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma (skin cancer) on the lips.
Any product that does not submit an application by this deadline must be removed from the marketplace, which if properly enforced, could lead a significantly smaller marketplace. The main component of e-cigarettes is the e-liquid contained in cartridges or tanks. To create an e-liquid, nicotine is extracted from tobacco and mixed with a base (usually propylene glycol), and may also include flavorings, colorings and other chemicals (such as formaldehyde and acrolein, which can cause irreversible lung damage). The American Lung Association is very concerned that we are at risk of losing another generation to tobacco-caused diseases as the result of e-cigarettes.
Many grants on this topic are funded through the Tobacco Regulatory Science Program, an NIH partnership with FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products to fund research to inform FDA’s tobacco regulatory activities. Interestingly, most of these reports linking COVID-19 harmful effects with smoking or vaping, are based on their capability of increasing the expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) in the lung. It is well known that ACE2 is the gate for SARS-CoV-2 entrance to the airways [106] and it is mainly expressed in type 2 alveolar epithelial cells and alveolar macrophages [107]. To date, most of the studies in this field indicate that current smokers have higher expression of ACE2 in the airways (reviewed by [108]) than healthy non-smokers [109, 110]. While tobacco products have been a long-standing public health issue, e-cigarette (aka e-cigs, vape pens, vapes) use has continued to gain popularity throughout the last decade. Poison centers began receiving calls about e-cigarettes and liquid nicotine products in 2010, which overlaps with the initial period where these products reached the U.S. market.

This is part of why teens who vape are nearly three times more likely to begin smoking cigarettes.
Due to what has been called an ‘epidemic’ of youth use of these products, FDA has prioritized prevention efforts. The agency has taken a multitude of actions to keep ENDS out of the hands of youth, from policy making to enforcement to education. While e-cigarettes can generally be a lower-risk alternative for adults who smoke cigarettes, the use of e-cigarettes is not risk-free. These products deliver harmful chemicals and contain nicotine, which is highly addictive. Moreover, given the harmful chemicals found in e-cigarettes, further high-quality research on both short- and long-term health outcomes is needed. The longer ENDS and other e-cigarettes are on the market, the more information we know about their impacts on health.
To date, no e-cigarette product has been approved by the FDA for smoking cessation. In contrast, nicotine replacement therapies (e.g., patch, gum, lozenge) and some prescription medications (i.e., varenicline, bupropion) have been evaluated by the FDA and found to be safe and effective at helping people quit smoking. Manufacturers and sellers of e-cigarettes aggressively target young people.
Altria Group chief executive William Gifford told analysts during a second-quarter conference call that makers of unregulated e-cigarettes are responding to consumers’ switching to nicotine pouches. According to the latest Nielsen convenience store report released Wednesday, Zyn sales have jumped 74.6% year-over-year with total annual sales now in the $2 billion range. Tobacco industry executives and analysts are sounding alarms about a surge of unregulated nicotine pouches entering the U.S. that is chipping away at regulated products.
The researchers said that the findings suggest that if tobacco cigarette smokers who use e-cigarettes for a healthier alternative to tobacco won’t benefit by the switch. Cannabis and CBD e-liquids usually contain other chemicals, such as base liquids or flavoring agents. They may cause side effects similar to those of nicotine-free e-cigarettes. Young people who vape nicotine are more likely to start smoking cigarettes in the future. The 2018 NAP report concluded there’s some evidence that nicotine and nicotine-free e-cigarettes can damage oral cells and tissues in people who don’t smoke cigarettes.
Among other things, the law prohibits the sale of vapor products to people under 18 years of age, requires sellers to obtain a license, and requires that vapor products in stores are inaccessible to minors. E-cigarettes are hooking a new generation on nicotine – putting millions of kids at risk and threatening decades of progress in reducing youth tobacco use. It’s a nationwide crisis of youth addiction, fueled by thousands of kid-friendly flavors and massive doses of nicotine. While secondhand smoke from cigarettes causes serious harm to others, there is no evidence so far that vaping is harmful to people around you and any risks are likely to be very low.
The replaceable liquid cartridge contains nicotine mixed with a base (usually propylene glycol), along with flavorings and chemicals. The tip often contains LED lights that simulate the glow of a burning cigarette. Nicotine poisoning can occur when someone ingests, inhales, or absorbs nicotine through the skin or eyes. It can be particularly dangerous for children and young adults, as they are more susceptible to the effects of nicotine. The tax must be broken out as a separate amount from the products sold in any transaction.
The Lung Association remains extremely troubled about the rapid increase of youth using these products and has repeatedly called upon the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to increase their oversight and scrutiny of these products to protect kids. This is Quitting is a free and anonymous text messaging program from Truth Initiative designed to help young people quit vaping. The first-of-its-kind quit program has helped over 700,000 youth and young adults quit vaping by incorporating messages from other young people like them who have attempted to, or successfully quit, e-cigarettes. Truth Initiative is America's largest nonprofit public health organization committed to preventing youth and young adult nicotine addiction and empowering quitting for all.
These products use an "e-liquid" that usually contains nicotine derived from tobacco, as well as flavorings, propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, and other ingredients. The dangers of vaping include lung and other organ damage, breathing problems, addiction and more. People tend to think of vaping as "safer" than smoking, but it’s not safe. When the coronavirus pandemic first began, Blaha says, data show that e-cigarette sales went down, possibly because people were spending more time at home and avoiding stores and public areas. In light of the EVALI outbreak, the CDC advises people who use e-cigarettes for smoking cessation to weigh the risks and benefits and first consider use of other FDA-approved smoking cessation options. The tobacco use landscape in the United States and Minnesota is evolving. E-cigarettes are rapidly increasing in popularity, especially among youth. However, products like cigarettes and smokeless tobacco continue to have a stronger hold in rural areas due to decades of targeted marketing by the tobacco industry, which integrated tobacco use into rural culture.
According to Blaha, there are three reasons e-cigarettes may be particularly enticing to young people. Second, e-cigarettes have a lower per-use cost than traditional cigarettes. State and local authorities can restrict the sale of flavored tobacco products, including e-cigarettes.

Richmond-based Altria previously took a $13 billion stake in Juul in 2018, when the brand controlled most of the U.S. vaping market. But Juul’s value plummeted after it was hit with lawsuits and investigations over its role in sparking a national spike in underage vaping.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has not approved any e-cigarette products as a medicine to help people quit smoking. This is because the quality and safety of e-cigarettes has not yet been thoroughly tested, and it is not clear whether they are actually helpful for people trying to quit. Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes or vapes) simulate the act of smoking, but you don’t burn tobacco when you use them. Instead, the e-cigarette is a battery-powered device that works by heating liquid into an aerosol, which you then inhale into your lungs. These electronic devices, also known as e-cigarettes, vapes, vape pens, personal vaporizers, e-cigars, pod systems, mods and e-hookah, are not a safe alternative to cigarette smoking. Talk with your teens about the health effects of nicotine and e-cigarettes.
Njoy is one of only three companies that previously received FDA’s OK for vaping products. Like those products, two of the Njoy menthol varieties come as cartridges that plug into a reusable device that heats liquid nicotine, turning it into an inhalable aerosol. E-cigarettes come in many shapes and sizes and can look like USB flash drives, pens, and other everyday items. Larger devices, such as tank systems or "mods," do not look like other tobacco products.

The vapor produced by e-cigarettes usually contains nicotine, heavy metals, volatile organic compounds, carcinogens (cancer causing chemicals), and in some cases, flavoring linked to serious lung disease. These and other harmful substances present in e-cigarette vapor can negatively affect the respiratory health of users. The monitoring of other tobacco product sales in conjunction with the monitoring of e-cigarette sales is necessary to provide a comprehensive picture of the overall U.S. tobacco product market. These cigarette data briefs provide estimates of cigarette sales in the U.S. market overall and select U.S. states. ] have been offset by the increasing consumption in low income countries, especially China. The Chinese market now consumes more cigarettes than all other low- and middle-income countries combined. Levels of naphthalene were slightly higher than those of pyrene in e-cigarette emissions, while the respective air blank was lower. Nevertheless, it seems likely that these compounds were detected in e-cigarette emissions due to their presence as low-level contaminants in the background air, rather than originating from the vaping product. E-cigarettes are devices that use an electric battery to heat up a liquid (commonly called an "e-liquid") into an aerosol, which the user inhales. Vitamin E acetate, diacetyl, formaldehyde, and acrolein are just a few among hundreds of potentially hazardous substances commonly found in e-liquids and their aerosols.
According to the study, 40.1% of 1,018 adolescents between the ages of 14 and 29 surveyed said they refilled devices not intended to be refilled and 35.8% recharged the battery of vaping pods meant to be thrown out after one use. Others reported mixing nicotine and cannabis liquids in devices designed only for nicotine. The decision lends new credibility to vaping companies’ longstanding claim that their products can help blunt the toll of smoking, which is blamed for 480,000 U.S. deaths annually due to cancer, lung disease and heart disease. Some of the harmful substances emitted in secondhand e-cigarette aerosols are similar to those in secondhand tobacco smoke.
However, no rigorous scientific studies have shown that they are safe for use. Some people who smoke choose to try e-cigarettes to help them stop smoking. But switching to e-cigarettes still exposes users to potentially serious ongoing health risks. It’s important to stop using all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, as soon as possible both to reduce health risks and to avoid staying addicted to nicotine.
This includes the biennial WHO Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic, which tracks the status of the tobacco epidemic and interventions to combat it and other relevant resources. Because of the lack of long-term data and the fact that patients have died from EVALI, the prognosis for those affected remains uncertain. Researchers are working hard to learn as much as possible about the illness, its causes, and the odds for making a full recovery. "We recommend that patients see a pulmonologist within one to two weeks after being discharged to undergo testing of lung function and pulse oximetry [level of oxygen in the blood]," she says.
In 2019, four years after JUUL introduced a new nicotine delivery system coupled with a relentless online, youth-focused marketing campaign, more than a quarter (27.5%) of high school students reported using e-cigarettes. Short-term studies haven't found evidence that exposure to secondhand aerosol from e-cigarettes hurts lung function, with one notable exception. Researchers found that people who were around vaping aerosol showed increases in serum cotinine, which is a marker that someone was exposed to nicotine (an ingredient often found in e-cigarettes). Given the long list of health risks posed by nicotine, more research needs to be done on how this exposure could affect someone’s lungs long-term like it can with secondhand smoke. By contrast, in most developed countries, female smoking rates are typically only a few percentage points below those of males.
Researchers noted that they were unable to assess any association between e-cigarette nicotine formulation and cigarette cessation outcomes. Another potential limitation was that the study only included adult participants who reported smoking within the previous 30 days, limiting information about younger smokers and former smokers. In that same vein, 5.9 million people began vaping, bringing the total use of tobacco products among those 12 and older to 64.4 million.
From early 2024, stronger controls on the importation, manufacture, advertising, supply and commercial possession of all e‑cigarette devices and components (with and without nicotine) are being implemented by the Australian Government. These regulatory changes are being implemented by the Federal Government in stages during 2024 in partnership with State and Territory Governments (TGA 2023). Researchers said that the results show e-cigarettes may confer as much as or potentially even more harm to users and especially patients at risk for vascular disease. Results showed that total cholesterol and LDL or "bad" cholesterol was higher in sole e-cigarette users compared to nonsmokers.
Death from nicotine poisoning is not common in adults because of their larger body size. However, using more than one type of nicotine-containing product at the same time can increase your risk. In a separate study conducted by Truth Initiative in 2019, almost half (46.9%) of e-cigarette device owners said that the e-cigarette device they used currently did not provide any disposal information, such as where to send used batteries or empty pods. Additionally, when e-cigarette device owners were asked about e-cigarette waste disposal, the majority (73.7%) believed that it was difficult to find e-cigarette drop off sites. Principal investigator Wendy Max, PhD, director of the Institute for Health & Aging, noted that from 2013 to 2018, e-cigarette use among high school students soared from 4.5% to 20.8%. The Australian Government’s new Public Health (Tobacco and Other Products) legislation commences from April 2024 and incorporates new controls governing the advertising and promotion of e‑cigarettes (Department of Health and Aged Care 2024). According to the National Tobacco Strategy 2023–2030 (Department of Health and Aged Care 2023b), strengthening regulations on e‑cigarettes has been listed as a priority area, and actions such as prohibiting the sale of flavoured e‑cigarettes have been proposed.
Similarly, a 2014 review reported that vaping may trigger gum, mouth, and throat irritation. In particular, a 2015 study examined the effects of flavored e-juices on both human lung cells and lung cells in mice. Here’s what we currently know about the effects of vaping fluids with and without nicotine and vaping cannabis or CBD. In cultured human airway epithelial cells, both e-cigarette aerosol and CS extract induced IL-8/CXCL8 (neutrophil chemoattractant) release [28]. Researchers noted that study participants using both types of cigarettes had a higher nicotine dependence in relation to e-cigarettes. Find more resources on tobacco, e-cigarettes, and vaping on the SAMHSA Store.
More people began vaping in 2023 than initiated alcohol or illicit substances. A 2015 study suggests that people who vape nicotine are more likely to become dependent on nicotine than people who vape nicotine-free fluids. Vaping might appear to be a less harmful choice for people trying to quit smoking. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t risks involved, even if the vape liquid is nicotine-free. For instance, a 2018 study reported that exposure to e-cigarette aerosol makes teeth surfaces more prone to developing bacteria.
Cigarette smoking is still the No. 1 cause of preventable death in this country, killing nearly five hundred thousand people each year. (According to some studies, more than half of longtime smokers will die from smoking-related complications.) It’s incredibly hard to stop smoking; people spend lifetimes trying. Around seventy per cent of American smokers say that they want to quit, and for many of them e-cigarettes have been a godsend. But, according to a 2017 study by the C.D.C., about fifty per cent more high schoolers and middle schoolers vape than smoke. Young people have taken a technology that was supposed to help grownups stop smoking and invented a new kind of bad habit, one that they have molded in their own image. The potential public-health benefit of the e-cigarette is being eclipsed by the unsettling prospect of a generation of children who may really love to vape.
Starting to use e-cigarettes or switching from tobacco products to e-cigarettes increases your risk of adverse health effects. Interestingly, there is a strong difference of opinion on e-cigarettes between countries. Whereas countries such as Brazil, Uruguay and India have banned the sale of e-cigarettes, others such as the United Kingdom support this device to quit smoking.
Differences between schools exist, but having more students with no nicotine use showed protective associations, while having more students with positive attitudes towards product use in one’s age group increased the susceptibility. The results of the present study suggest that both interventions tailored by educational aspirations and universal school policies are needed to reach youth at high-risk of initiation. The concentration of nicotine in the BB57 emissions relative to BB18 was three times greater and followed the three-fold increase in nicotine strength of the e-liquid. In the cigarette smoke, the measured nicotine concentration of 0.23 ± 0.01 mg puff–1 (Table 1), equivalent to 2.07 ± 0.09 mg cig−1, is in accordance with the Ky1R6F certificate value of 1.9 ± 0.1 mg cig−1 (ISO Intense smoking regime)56.
E-Cigarettes, also called personal vaporizers or "vapes", present another way for smokers to ingest nicotine. E-Cigarettes have been marketed to young adults and adolescents through the use of candy and fruit flavors. They are also touted by some users as a "safer" alternative to smoking, and as a way to either quit smoking cigarettes, or to smoke in places where cigarette smoking is not allowed.
Similar results emerged when they excluded individual states with statewide policies from the analysis, showing that no one state was driving this effect. Bans on all vapes, including both flavored and unflavored, also resulted in more cigarette sales. The authors used rigorous statistical tools to estimate long-term effects of e-cigarette flavor restrictions on electronic and conventional cigarette sales in jurisdictions across 16 states. They also examined how these effects varied between brands disproportionately used by underage youth versus adults. Nicotine yields for different e-cigarette brands have been reported from 2 to 313 µg puff−1 while for conventional cigarettes smoke the values ranged from 170 to 232 µg puff−16,31,36,48,64. Nicotine poisoning refers to the toxic effects of consuming nicotine, a chemical in all tobacco products. A recent increase in poisonings is due to liquid nicotine, a product in the popular e-cigarette. Symptoms include vomiting, rapid heart rate, unsteadiness and increased salivation. The comprehensive review of the evidence finds that almost all of the 2.6 million adults using e-cigarettes in Great Britain are current or ex-smokers, most of whom are using the devices to help them quit smoking or to prevent them going back to cigarettes. It also provides reassurance that very few adults and young people who have never smoked are becoming regular e-cigarette users (less than 1% in each group).

But, he adds, "The worst critics of e-cigarettes would probably argue they're a half to two-thirds less dangerous. But from a practical view, they're probably on the order of 80% to 85% less dangerous, at least." A 2015 expert review from Public Health England estimated e-cigs are 95% less harmful than the real thing.

Given their relatively recent introduction, there has been little time for a scientific body of evidence to develop on the health effects of e-cigarettes. Notably, the reverse was not true—students who said they smoked cigarettes were no more likely to report use of e-cigarettes when asked approximately 6 months later. Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, are tobacco products that have been sold in the U.S. for about a decade. They include e-pens, e-pipes, e-hookah, and e-cigars, known collectively as ENDS—electronic nicotine delivery systems. They're also sometimes called JUULs, "vapes" and "vape pens." E-cigarettes are the most commonly used tobacco products among kids—and it's become an epidemic. While much remains to be determined about the lasting health consequences of e-cigarettes, there’s evolving evidence about the health risks of e-cigarettes on the lungs—including irreversible lung damage and lung disease.
E-cigarettes, also known as e-cigs, vapes, vape pens, and electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), are experiencing rapid growth in popularity, especially among teens and young adults. They come in a variety of forms, sometimes looking like USB flash drives, pens, and other items that make them hard for parents and teachers to spot. Other electronic devices that heat tobacco instead of liquid nicotine, such as IQOS, are not considered e-cigarettes. Teens cannot participate in such studies, but "we all agree that e-cigs are not a good thing for youth and nonsmokers," Dr. Baldassarri says. The researchers concluded that vaping with and without nicotine disrupts typical lung function in otherwise healthy people. The researchers reported a number of adverse effects on both types of cells, including toxicity, oxidation, and inflammation. However, these results aren’t necessarily generalizable to vaping in real life. A 2019 study assessed data from a nationwide survey of nearly 450,000 participants and found no significant association between e-cigarette use and heart disease. The particle matter (PM) that is emitted by e-cigarettes is also potentially dangerous to those who inhale it, just as passive smoking is harmful to those who share a contained space with regular smokers. Nicotine is a poison which is particularly dangerous if ingested (swallowed or inhaled) by young children which has led to poisoning and even death when swallowed by infants. New 'pod-mod' style vape products are similar in shape and size to JUUL
However, many young users report they began using e-cigarettes because of the flavors and, according to CDC, do not realize they are inhaling nicotine. E-cigarettes are relatively new, and their long-term effects are not yet known. Although they may potentially be less harmful substitutes for traditional cigarettes, risks of addiction, injury, and death from e-cigarettes are becoming more apparent. Wehrli noted that they observed these striking changes after the participants (all of whom never smoked previously) used an e-cigarette a single time.
Many e-cigarettes sold in the U.S. contain far more nicotine than e-cigarettes sold elsewhere, which increases the risk of addiction and harm to the developing brains of youth and young adults. Marketing tactics targeting young people have contributed to the rapid increase in use. The long-term risks of exclusive use of e-cigarettes are not fully known but evidence is accumulating that e-cigarette use has negative effects on the cardiovascular system and lungs.

In addition, 5 of the 11 vapours tested (including 4 that were cytotoxic) reduced HUVEC proliferation and one of them increased the production of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) [24]. Three of the most cytotoxic vapours—with effects similar to those of conventional high-nicotine CS extracts—also caused comparable morphological changes [24].
