In 2022, e-cigarettes remained the most common tobacco product used by high school (16.5%) and middle school (4.5%) students in the last 30 days. And more than a quarter (27.6%) of current youth e-cigarette users say they use an e-cigarette product every day.
Given that nicotine easily diffuses from the dermis to the bloodstream, acute nicotine exposure by e-liquid spilling (5 mL of a 20 mg/mL nicotine-containing refill is equivalent to 100 mg of nicotine) can easily be toxic or even deadly [8]. Thus, devices with rechargeable refills are another issue of concern with e-cigarettes, especially when e-liquids are not sold in child-safe containers, increasing the risk of spilling, swallowing or breathing. An E-cigarette is any device or delivery system sold in combination with nicotine for a single price which can be used to deliver to a person nicotine in aerosolized or vaporized form. To create an e-liquid, nicotine is extracted from tobacco and mixed with a base (usually propylene glycol), and may also include flavorings, colorings and other chemicals (such as formaldehyde and acrolein, which can cause irreversible lung damage). The American Lung Association is very concerned that we are at risk of losing another generation to tobacco-caused diseases as the result of e-cigarettes.
This can also increase the levels of other toxicants to the user and also expose bystanders to harmful emissions. Vapes, vaporizers, vape pens, hookah pens, electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes or e-cigs), e-cigars, and e-pipes are some of the many tobacco product terms used to describe electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). They can also be collectively called electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS).
Jabba and colleagues, including co-senior author Sven Eric Jordt, Ph.D., analyzed an e-cigarette product sold under the brand name Spree Bar, which comes in at least nine flavors and is listed as containing 5 percent 6-methyl nicotine. Study results showed the actual amount of the chemical was about 88% less than labeled. The e-cigarettes also included an artificial sweetener that is up to 13,000 times sweeter than table sugar, and an artificial coolant that mimics menthol’s effects. Among girls, only a higher proportion of never-users in the school remained protective for S-SM and S-EC. Among boys, the same was observed for S-EC, whereas a higher proportion of students with positive attitudes towards snus use in one’s age group increased S-SN. Interestingly, a higher proportion of students planning for general upper secondary education had lowered S-EC and S-SN in the univariate analyses but increased S-SM and S-SN in the multivariate models. This may reflect, for instance, more complex interactions between individual- and school-level factors influencing susceptibility among boys. In general, students with positive attitude towards product use in one’s age group and current use of some other tobacco or nicotine product had consistently higher susceptibility regardless of product type.
The most important points to know are that the long-term health effects of e-cigarettes are still unknown, and all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, can pose health risks to the user. For example, in an analysis using primary human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) exposed to 11 commercially-available vapours, 5 were found to be acutely cytotoxic, and only 3 of those contained nicotine [24]. In addition, 5 of the 11 vapours tested (including 4 that were cytotoxic) reduced HUVEC proliferation and one of them increased the production of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) [24]. Three of the most cytotoxic vapours—with effects similar to those of conventional high-nicotine CS extracts—also caused comparable morphological changes [24]. Endothelial cell migration is an important mechanism of vascular repair than can be disrupted in smokers due to endothelial dysfunction [25, 26]. For smokeless tobacco (snus) use and electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use, the associations with SEP have been mixed [7, 9, 10]. The scientists investigated the effect of the e-liquids on cells called endothelial cells that line the interior of blood vessels.
A Yale study in 2019 found that, among students at three Connecticut public schools, those who used e-cigarettes were more likely to smoke regular cigarettes in the future. Most e-cigarettes have a battery, a heating element, and place to hold a liquid (such as a cartridge or pod). The e-liquid usually contains nicotine, flavorings, and other chemicals. As the user draws on the device, the battery heats the e-liquid to produce aerosol (not water vapor).
Children 13–15-years old are using e-cigarettes at rates higher than adults in all WHO regions. In Canada, the rates of e-cigarette use among 16–19-year-olds has doubled between 2017–2022, and in England (the United Kingdom) the number of young users has tripled in the past three years. The Alabama Tobacco Quitline is a free telephone and online coaching service for any Alabamian who is ready to quit tobacco or e-cigarette use. A PDF is a digital representation of the print book, so while it can be loaded into most e-reader programs, it doesn't allow for resizable text or advanced, interactive functionality. The eBook is optimized for e-reader devices and apps, which means that it offers a much better digital reading experience than a PDF, including resizable text and interactive features (when available).
Young adults also were more likely to use both e-cigarettes and combustible cigarettes compared with adults 45 and older. Liquid nicotine in e-cigarettes can be easily absorbed by the skin, potentially causing nicotine poisoning with symptoms that include difficulty breathing, fainting, or seizures. For a comprehensive list of all TCRG publications, including TCRG research that evaluates the impact of public health policy, go to the Bath TCRG’s list of publications. BAT went on to acquire more independent e-cigarette companies, and developed a range of products under the Vype and Vuse brands. In 2020, BAT began consolidating the two brands as Vuse.8910 In 2022 it launched a "disposable" product Vuse Go (see below).
"It’s young people doing something terrible for them that’s supposed to be healthy," he said. There’s a whole genre of throwing-away-my-Juul videos on social media, with people tossing their vape into a river or a snowbank as dramatic music plays. New research led by Roswell Park experts in health behavior and published today in the journal JAMA Network Open suggests that daily e-cigarette use may help some people to quit using combustible cigarettes.
In the multivariate model (Table 3), results were similar for both girls and boys. S-EC remained higher for those planning for vocational education, and lower with liking school. Further, S-EC was higher with parental smoking, positive attitudes towards e-cigarette use in one’s age group, current smoking, and current snus use. Between-school differences were larger for girls (MOR 1.23) than boys (MOR 1.16). Educational aspirations were measured with ‘Where do you primarily want to go to study after comprehensive school?
High level of parental education was operationalized as at least one parent having tertiary education, and parental smoking as at least one parent smoking currently. ’ and dichotomized from responses Very much/quite a lot (vs. fairly little/not at all). Delaware Kick Butts Generation A youth-led program in schools and communities to counter tobacco marketing. E-cigarette flavorings damage human blood vessel cells grown in the lab even in the absence of nicotine, Stanford researchers and their colleagues found. Children are much more prone to nicotine overdose because of their smaller body size. Nicotine poisoning in children comes mostly from eating cigarettes and consuming liquid nicotine — either from absorbing spilled nicotine through their skin or through the mucous membrane in their mouth or from swallowing liquid nicotine.

If your device does not have a lithium battery, you may pack it in either you checked or carry-on bag. Some use a buttery-tasting chemical called diacetyl, which is often added to foods like popcorn. Stores selling them -- called "vape shops" -- are everywhere across the country. Our blog has an easy-to-read guide on the latest vaping regulations and the changes to how you vape. NSW Health has launched a new mass media behaviour change campaign aiming to address the issue of vaping by young people. The campaign, ‘Every vape is a hit to your health’ utilises powerful creative to encourage young people to consider the proven health harms of vaping, such as nicotine addiction, lung damage, breathlessness, nicotine poisoning and burns from exploding vapes. If you're pregnant and need support to quit smoking, licensed nicotine replacement therapy products like patches and gum are the recommended option. Making small changes to your vape products or how you vape should help. Side effects are usually easily managed and should not stop you from vaping as a way to quit smoking. You're roughly twice as likely to quit smoking if you use a nicotine vape compared with other nicotine replacement products, like patches or gum.
The cells are also less able to form new vascular tubes and to migrate and participate in wound healing. With a 399.73% increase in retail e-cigarette sales (excluding internet sales and tobacco-specialty stores) from 2015 through 2020, the environmental consequences of e-cigarette waste are enormous. The fourth-generation vaporizers can also be customized and come with different types of heating coils — some intended for vaporizing solids, not liquids. In general, people using e‑cigarettes did not report doing so in order to quit smoking regular tobacco cigarettes. In 2022–2023, only 1 in 5 (21%) people who had ever used e‑cigarettes reported that they first used e‑cigarettes to help them quit smoking (Figure 5). The most common reason people gave for using e‑cigarettes was out of curiosity (58%).
In many high and middle income countries lower socioeconomic status is a strong predictor of smoking. In North America, the common name for the remains of a cigarette after smoking is a cigarette butt. In Britain, it is also called a fag-end or a dog-end.[44] The butt is typically about 30% of the cigarette's original length. It consists of a tissue tube which holds a filter and some remains of tobacco mixed with ash. According to data from the World Health Organization,[39] the amount of tobacco per 1000 cigarettes fell from 1.03 kg (2.28 pounds) in 1960 to 0.41 kg (0.91 pounds) in 1999, largely as a result of reconstituting tobacco, fluffing, and additives. The epidemic use of e-cigarettes is a complicated problem which requires a cooperative effort between partners, organizations, and communities.
However, the leading causes of nicotine poisoning are smokeless tobacco products (chew and snuff) and liquid nicotine that’s used in e-cigarettes. Chewing and snorting tobacco releases more nicotine into the body than smoking. E-cigarettes are not completely risk free but when compared to smoking, evidence shows they carry just a fraction of the harm. The problem is people increasingly think they are at least as harmful and this may be keeping millions of smokers from quitting. Local stop smoking services should look to support e-cigarette users in their journey to quitting completely.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that vaping nicotine can permanently affect brain development in people under the age of 25. The researchers concluded that vaping with and without nicotine disrupts typical lung function in otherwise healthy people. The researchers reported a number of adverse effects on both types of cells, including toxicity, oxidation, and inflammation. However, these results aren’t necessarily generalizable to vaping in real life. A 2019 study assessed data from a nationwide survey of nearly 450,000 participants and found no significant association between e-cigarette use and heart disease. The authors also described moderate evidence suggesting that taking a puff from an e-cigarette increases blood pressure.
The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Lung Association are glad to have the rules. But, Sward adds, "We certainly thought [the FDA] should have gone farther -- ending the sale of flavored products." Some come in candy and fruity flavors that appeal to kids and teens. Sward points out that according to the FDA, there's no evidence any e-cigarette is safe and effective at helping smokers quit. She suggests talking to your doctor about medications and other strategies that are proven stop-smoking tools. There is an urgent, overdue need for standardized processes for the disposal of e-cigarette devices, refills and e-liquids. Waste management and hazardous waste disposal plants are not currently equipped to handle e-cigarette waste and federal regulations still have not caught up to the need for guidance on disposal of these types of small electronics containing toxic waste.
Parents and anti-tobacco groups immediately criticized the decision, which follows years of advocacy efforts to keep menthol and other flavors that can appeal to teens off the market. The FDA said it authorized four menthol e-cigarettes from Njoy, the vaping brand recently acquired by tobacco giant Altria, which also sells Marlboro cigarettes. This is in contrast to passive smoking (secondhand smoke), which is known to be very harmful to health.
To learn more about tobacco and its health effects, see Tobacco and Cancer. There have been reports of e-cigarettes exploding and causing serious injuries. Usually the explosions are caused by faulty batteries or because the batteries were not handled as they should be. Visit the Food and Drug Administration website for safety tips to help avoid an e-cigarette battery explosion. Among people who were hospitalized with severe EVALI, most were younger than 35 and used THC-containing vapes from informal sources (online, family or friends). However, EVALI can happen in anyone using either nicotine or THC-containing vapes.
When I exhale, the vapor is gone within 10 seconds, along with the smell. Funny how just about 10 years ago people were still allowed to smoke actual cigarettes in some restaurants and I didn’t see anyone walking out on their meal due to the smell coming from the smoking section. I’m not saying it was a wonderful arrangement, but people dealt with it.
The review authors conclude that further research could help untangle how vapers’ bodies develop disease. These types of studies, they say, promise to identify early indicators of—and ultimately treatments for—vaping-related disease. While some tout e-cigarettes as a solution to quitting conventional smoking, the truth about relative risks is complicated, says Crotty Alexander, who is a researcher in addition to providing patient care and teaching.
A lack of data has led to classification of methylgloxal as a Group 3 carcinogen (carcinogenicity to humans not classifiable) by IARC. Both compounds have been previously detected in e-cigarette emissions at concentrations of 0.07–0.94 and 0.09–33 µg puff–1, respectively86,88. In our study, glyoxal was present at lower levels (BB57 and BB18, 0.02 and 0.05 µg puff–1, respectively), while methylglyoxal was at concentrations of 0.13 and 0.19 µg puff–1 in BB57 and BB18, respectively (Table 3). Glyoxal was detected in the method air blank and therefore the actual levels in the e-cigarette emissions are potentially lower than reported in Table 3.
One of the first studies in humans involved the analysis of 9 volunteers that consumed e-cigarettes, with or without nicotine, in a ventilated room for 2 h [8]. Pollutants in indoor air, exhaled nitric oxide (NO) and urinary metabolite profiles were analysed. The results of this acute experiment revealed that e-cigarettes are not emission-free, and ultrafine particles formed from propylene glycol (PG) could be detected in the lungs. In line with these observations, dysregulation of lung homeostasis has been documented in non-smokers subjected to acute inhalation of e-cigarette aerosols [10]. Globally, there is an ongoing debate about whether e-cigarettes are a threat or an opportunity to public health.
One in five Minnesota teens (grades 6-12) have asthma, a serious chronic disease that can make it difficult to breathe. Minnesota youth who have asthma are more likely than their peers to smoke or vape, and people who have asthma who smoke or vape are likely to experience worsening symptoms and require medical treatment. Coauthors reported relationships with Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson, grants from nonprofits, and personal fees from public health authorities and from plaintiff law firms. Nine challenges have been released as part of this effort, including a challenge to address the impact of e-cigarette use. Expressions of interest for the challenges are now open, and final teams will be announced in 2022.
"Parents should base their information on accurate facts and also encourage their children to read about and understand the science on this issue instead of relying on what their friends and peers tell them." Oregon Health & Science University is dedicated to improving the health and quality of life for all Oregonians through excellence, innovation and leadership in health care, education and research. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has regulatory authority over synthetic nicotine as it does over tobacco-derived nicotine.
No amount of nicotine is safe for youth as there may be long-term, damaging effects on learning, memory, attention, behavior problems, and future addiction. Electronic cigarettes or vapes (referred to collectively as ‘e‑cigarettes’) are personal vaping devices where users inhale aerosol rather than smoke. The inhaled aerosol usually contains flavourings, a range of toxic chemicals, and may contain nicotine as well (Department of Health and Aged Care 2023a).
To date, no e-cigarette product has been approved by the FDA for smoking cessation. In contrast, nicotine replacement therapies (e.g., patch, gum, lozenge) and some prescription medications (i.e., varenicline, bupropion) have been evaluated by the FDA and found to be safe and effective at helping people quit smoking. Manufacturers and sellers of e-cigarettes aggressively target young people.
