In many high and middle income countries lower socioeconomic status is a strong predictor of smoking. In North America, the common name for the remains of a cigarette after smoking is a cigarette butt. In Britain, it is also called a fag-end or a dog-end.[44] The butt is typically about 30% of the cigarette's original length. It consists of a tissue tube which holds a filter and some remains of tobacco mixed with ash. According to data from the World Health Organization,[39] the amount of tobacco per 1000 cigarettes fell from 1.03 kg (2.28 pounds) in 1960 to 0.41 kg (0.91 pounds) in 1999, largely as a result of reconstituting tobacco, fluffing, and additives. The epidemic use of e-cigarettes is a complicated problem which requires a cooperative effort between partners, organizations, and communities.

E-cigarettes contain many of the same cancer-causing chemicals that regular cigarettes do. Nicotine is highly addictive, and most e-cigarettes include it as a main ingredient. The AMA promotes the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health. The rise of e-cigarettes and vaping has raised concerns that another generation may become dependent on nicotine. The AMA has been a leading force to eliminate public smoking and warn people about the dangers of smoking, including secondhand smoke, since the 1960s.
Yet there has been hardly any definitive legislation regarding the sale and consumption of e-cigs in the U.S. Meanwhile Canada has made it illegal to sell e-cigarettes preloaded with nicotine in stores, but the regulation is not well enforced, and customers can buy vials of nicotine online. At press time, the European Parliament had approved a ban on e-cigarette advertising starting in mid-2016, and the ban seemed likely to get approval from the E.U.'s member states. Vaping products in the state also have to include health warnings per California state laws regarding the use of nicotine and other chemicals.
Their actions should come as no surprise as e-cigarette manufacturers fail to provide consumers with guidance or take responsibility for appropriate disposal methods. In a separate study conducted by Truth Initiative in 2019, almost half (46.9%) of e-cigarette device owners said that the e-cigarette device they used currently did not provide any disposal information, such as where to send used batteries or empty pods. Additionally, when e-cigarette device owners were asked about e-cigarette waste disposal, the majority (73.7%) believed that it was difficult to find e-cigarette drop off sites. Principal investigator Wendy Max, PhD, director of the Institute for Health & Aging, noted that from 2013 to 2018, e-cigarette use among high school students soared from 4.5% to 20.8%. The Australian Government’s new Public Health (Tobacco and Other Products) legislation commences from April 2024 and incorporates new controls governing the advertising and promotion of e‑cigarettes (Department of Health and Aged Care 2024). According to the National Tobacco Strategy 2023–2030 (Department of Health and Aged Care 2023b), strengthening regulations on e‑cigarettes has been listed as a priority area, and actions such as prohibiting the sale of flavoured e‑cigarettes have been proposed.
In our study, there were between-school differences, which appeared larger for girls than boys. In the univariate analyses, most school-level factors either increased or lowered susceptibility. This was especially the case among girls in S-EC and S-SN, and among boys in S-SM. In the multivariate models, most of the school-level associations were weakened.
Consequently, stricter regulation and a higher quality control in the e-liquid industry are required. The mislabelling of nicotine content in e-liquids has been previously addressed [8, 34]. Of note, several studies have detected nicotine in those e-liquids labelled as nicotine-free [5, 35, 36]. Among the 17 samples tested in this latter study 14 were identified to be counterfeit or suspected counterfeit. A third study detected nicotine in 7 of 10 nicotine-free refills, although the concentrations were lower than those identified in the previous analyses (0.1–15 µg/mL) [5].
Children and adults can develop nicotine poisoning from swallowing, breathing, or absorbing e-liquid through their skin or eyes. E-cigarette use can also result in serious injury due to defective batteries that have caused fires and explosions. Vaping and smoking both involve inhaling nicotine and other substances into the lungs. While cigarettes burn tobacco that produces smoke, e-cigarettes heat liquid to make an aerosol that often contains nicotine, various chemicals, heavy metals (nickel, tin, and lead) and small particles that can be inhaled deeply into the lungs.
Nonetheless, adults who smoke who switch to using e-cigarettes expose themselves to potentially serious ongoing health risks. If they are unable to quit e-cigarettes on their own, they should seek help from a health care professional or quitline. Individuals who are not yet able to stop using e-cigarettes should be strongly discouraged from simultaneous, or "dual," use of any combustible tobacco products, including cigarettes. Continuing to smoke exposes the individual to enormous harms, irrespective of whether the individual is using e-cigarettes part of the time. All individuals should also be strongly counseled to not revert to smoking. Some look like a regular cigarette, but many resemble everyday products like pens, USB drives, highlighting markers, or colorful toy-like items.
To our knowledge, no studies in Europe have examined susceptibility to e-cigarette (S-EC) use and snus use (S-SN). Glyoxal and methylglyoxal are formed by thermal degradation or oxidation of PG and VG87. Glyoxal is considered mutagenic, while the related compound methylglyoxal has been identified as a metabolite during glycolysis and is thus naturally present in the body. Methylglyoxal is also present in foods and drinks such as honey and coffee.
One in five Minnesota teens (grades 6-12) have asthma, a serious chronic disease that can make it difficult to breathe. Minnesota youth who have asthma are more likely than their peers to smoke or vape, and people who have asthma who smoke or vape are likely to experience worsening symptoms and require medical treatment. Coauthors reported relationships with Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson, grants from nonprofits, and personal fees from public health authorities and from plaintiff law firms. Nine challenges have been released as part of this effort, including a challenge to address the impact of e-cigarette use. Expressions of interest for the challenges are now open, and final teams will be announced in 2022.
Median odds ratio (MOR), which shows the difference between two respondents with identical student-level characteristics from two randomly chosen different schools, was calculated to express between-school variance on the odds ratio scale [36]. The analysis was not pre-registered, and the results should be considered exploratory. Scholastic Real Cost of VapingThe FDA collaborated with the Scholastic Corporation to develop lessons, activities and resources for teachers to increase awareness about the health consequences of youth e-cigarette use. Stanford Medicine is an integrated academic health system comprising the Stanford School of Medicine and adult and pediatric health care delivery systems. Together, they harness the full potential of biomedicine through collaborative research, education and clinical care for patients. This study was the first to use endothelial cells derived from iPS cells to directly investigate the effect of e-liquids with and without nicotine on their viability and function.
It would seem that future studies should analyse the possible toxic effects of humectants and related products at concentrations similar to those that e-cigarette vapers are exposed to reach conclusive results. Vape aerosols are not just harmless water vapors that are inhaled and exhaled (as marketed). Vape aerosol exposure is unsafe and contains chemicals, metals (i.e., lead, nickel), and other particles that can interfere with lung development and health.
Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are devices made to resemble cigarettes. Despite making great strides to reduce smoking, tobacco is still our biggest killer. Our region has always kept an open mind towards using electronic cigarettes as we can see the massive potential health benefits from switching.
To inform schools of intervention needs, the susceptibility measure could be utilized in school surveys and relevant student services as a screening tool. Simultaneously, it would support the evaluation of existing policies and programmes and monitoring of potential counter-effects. For example, an earlier study observed that school-based programmes and policies had resulted in higher susceptibility risk at some intervention schools [37]. Effective and non-counter-productive interventions are especially important for products where susceptibility is at a high level, like e-cigarettes. Interventions to reduce susceptibility therefore need to address product regulation and marketing as well as social influence, norms, and perceptions.
The 2019 outbreak of EVALI cases emerged against a backdrop of an ongoing vaping epidemic among youth. The amount, quantity and toxicity of substances that e-cigarettes release depend on several factors, such as the type of device, how the device operates and is used, and the e-liquid used. Drop the Vape also directs users to the New York State Quitline for free and confidential quit-coaching via telephone, internet, and text, and free starter kits of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) for eligible New Yorkers. In absence of federal law, states are acting to remove flavored nicotine products from the shelves. All the e-cigarettes previously authorized by the FDA have been tobacco, which isn’t widely used by young people who vape.
The FDA has the legal authority to regulate tobacco products containing nicotine from any source, including synthetic nicotine. In 2016, the FDA established a rule for e-cigarettes and their liquid solutions. Because e-cigarettes contain nicotine derived from tobacco, they are now subject to government regulation as tobacco products.

To vape is to inhale vapor created from a liquid heated up inside a device. The devices have many names—vape pens, pod mods, tanks, electronic nicotine delivery devices (ENDS), e-hookahs and e-cigarettes. Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine and their repeated use can lead to nicotine addiction or increase the user's risk of addiction. Some e-cigarette brands contain nicotine salts to mask the harshness of nicotine and make it more palatable. As of 2018, all tobacco products must bear the required nicotine addictiveness warning statement on product packages and advertisements in order to warn consumers about the presence of and addictive nature of nicotine.
Some products claiming to be nicotine-free (ENNDS) have been found to contain nicotine. Your doctor will begin his or her diagnosis by asking you about your use of e-cigarettes within the past three months and whether you vaped a product containing nicotine, THC, or both. During the physical exam, your doctor will use a stethoscope to listen to your lungs, check your heartrate, and measure your blood oxygen saturation using a pulse oximeter. A chest X-ray or computed tomography (CT) scan is usually necessary for diagnosis and will show hazy looking spots (called opacities) in the lungs. Your doctor may also order bloodwork to rule out other possible causes of your illness.
"When you are out and about with your children and see an advertisement, for example, take the opportunity to talk about it," she says. As they grow older, parents can expand on their thoughts and expectations. "It’s also important to give teens and young adults the space to ask questions," she says. The 2023 NYTS showed that about 2 million middle and high school students reported using e-cigarettes in the last 30 days. Another study that year found that the rates of youth who say they vaped with nicotine in the past month more than doubled in two years. About 11% of high school seniors reported this habit in 2017, compared to 25%, or one in four seniors, in 2019.
A priority of the New York State Tobacco Control Program is to prevent the initiation of tobacco use, including combustible tobacco and electronic cigarettes, by youth and young adults. The Program funds Reality Check, the youth engagement component for New York State teens, ages 13-18, to increase support for New York State's tobacco-free and vape-free norms through youth action and community engagement. Evidence-based, policy-driven, and cost-effective approaches are implemented to decrease youth tobacco use, protect youth from exposure to tobacco marketing and imagery, and eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke. Visit Reality Check for more information and to find your local Reality Check group. According to a 2019 CDC industry update, one out of every 10 high school students reported using tobacco products, due in part to easy access through mail deliveries and online sellers.
Researchers noted that they were unable to assess any association between e-cigarette nicotine formulation and cigarette cessation outcomes. Another potential limitation was that the study only included adult participants who reported smoking within the previous 30 days, limiting information about younger smokers and former smokers. In that same vein, 5.9 million people began vaping, bringing the total use of tobacco products among those 12 and older to 64.4 million.
This ban builds upon legislation signed in July by Governor Cuomo that immediately banned the use of e-cigarettes on all public and private school grounds in New York State. The CDC’s Office on Smoking and Health (OSH) developed this presentation to educate youth on e-cigarettes, including the health risks, the factors that lead to e-cigarette use, and what youth can do to avoid all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes. This resource is intended for adults who educate or serve youth ages (teachers, youth ministers, coaches, scout leaders, etc.). Utilizing the talking points and information for the users' document, the presenter does not require additional information, nor permission to deliver the presentation. Today, nicotine poisoning has become a growing concern because of new nicotine products on the market, particularly electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and pure liquid nicotine. The concentration of nicotine in liquid products is higher than most other tobacco products.
In response to this issue, the PACT Act Amendment prohibits sellers from using the U.S. Post Office to ship e-cigarettes, vapes, flavored and smokeless tobacco products. The PACT Act applies to all shipments in interstate commerce (15 U.S.C. § 376) as well as to all delivery sales. Some people who smoke choose to use both cigarettes and e-cigarettes at the same time on an ongoing basis, whether they are trying to quit or not.
Vaping may also have specific adverse effects on certain groups, particularly young people. The full magnitude of effects of toxic e-cigarette ingredients may not be known for another three decades. Yale’s Tobacco Center of Regulatory Science received funding support for the study from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, which is part of the National Institutes of Health (U54DA036151), and the Center for Tobacco Products of the FDA. This is why it took as long as it did for the negative health effects of cigarettes to be widely recognized. There is abundant evidence that e-cigarettes can help some individuals to quit smoking, so they should be more widely recommended as smoking cessation aids. Vaping and smoking share similar negative effects on the body, such as damage to the lungs and increased cancer risk.
Cumberland County piloted CATCH My Breath in 2022, and had teachers in the restorative justice classrooms of Howard Learning Academy Middle School and Pine Forest High School run the program. The pilot was enough of a success that the county is now training one person in every middle and high school in the district to implement the program on a needs-basis in restorative justice classrooms this school year. There were also participants in a "waitlist" group, who received neither text messages through the This is Quitting program nor the assessment-only follow-up messages. The liquid solution can contain nicotine, flavorings, harmful chemicals, or other substances. Since the early 2000s TTCs have developed interests in e-cigarettes (also known as electronic delivery systems, or ENDS), heated tobacco products (HTPs), snus and nicotine pouches. Companies have referred to these types of product as ‘next generation products’ (NGPs) although terminology changes over time. Finally, the report discusses steps that e-cigarette companies took in 2021 to deter or prevent underage consumers from visiting their websites, signing up for mailing lists and loyalty programs, or buying e-cigarette products online. These steps include the use of online self-certification to verify users were at least 21 years old and following state laws requiring an adult signature upon delivery of e-cigarette products. The 2021 report also provides details on some characteristics of e-cigarette products, including flavors and nicotine concentration, as well as the bundling of the components in cartridge systems.

Vaping is often thought of as safer than cigarette smoking, but vaping causes health problems, too.
Many people believe electronic cigarette uk cigarettes (also called e-cigarettes or vapes) are a safe alternative to traditional cigarettes. But with a recent report from the U.S. surgeon general calling e-cigarette use "a major public health concern," this may not be the case. The FDA reports an alarming 900% rise in e-cigarette use among high school students from 2011 to 2015 and the number of high school students using them increased 78% in 2018 alone. In addition, third-hand smoke on clothes and furniture is smelly and can be dangerous for people with respiratory conditions. Vaping doesn’t produce the same smelly fumes as cigarettes, but the secondhand vapor contains chemicals and compounds that pollute the indoor air.
Results of toxicological analyses suggest that e-cigarettes can be safer than conventional cigarettes, although harmful effects from short-term e-cigarette use have been described. Worryingly, the potential long-term effects of e-cigarette consumption have been scarcely investigated. In this review, we take stock of the main findings in this field and their consequences for human health including coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Heart failure is a condition affecting more than 6 million U.S. adults in which the heart becomes too stiff or too weak to pump blood as effectively as it should.
E-cigarettes are popular among teens and young adults, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). E-cigarettes come in many shapes and sizes and can look like USB flash drives, pens, and other everyday items. Larger devices, such as tank systems or "mods," do not look like other tobacco products.
Similarly, a 2014 review reported that vaping may trigger gum, mouth, and throat irritation. In particular, a 2015 study examined the effects of flavored e-juices on both human lung cells and lung cells in mice. Here’s what we currently know about the effects of vaping fluids with and without nicotine and vaping cannabis or CBD. In cultured human airway epithelial cells, both e-cigarette aerosol and CS extract induced IL-8/CXCL8 (neutrophil chemoattractant) release [28]. Researchers noted that study participants using both types of cigarettes had a higher nicotine dependence in relation to e-cigarettes. In the second study, researchers analyzed heart blood flow, a measure of coronary vascular function, of 19 young adult smokers immediately before and after smoking either e-cigarettes or tobacco cigarettes. They examined coronary vascular function by a myocardial contrast echocardiography while participants were at rest and after performing a handgrip exercise to simulate physiologic stress. In the first study, researchers looked at the impact of e-cigarettes on lipids and glucose in the blood. They recruited 476 healthy human participants without cardiovascular disease who were either nonsmokers, e-cigarette-only smokers, smokers of e-cigarettes and tobacco cigarettes and those who smoked tobacco cigarettes only.
The tobacco industry profits from destroying health and is using these newer products to get a seat at the policy making table with governments to lobby against health policies. WHO is concerned that the tobacco industry funds and promotes false evidence to argue that these products reduce harm, while at the same time heavily promoting these products to children and non-smokers and continuing to sell billions of cigarettes. Nicotine affects the development of the brain’s reward system and brain circuits that control attention and learning. Continued use of nicotine can lead to addiction and raise the risk for addiction to other drugs. In a recent study, about 18% of people who switched to vaping had been able to quit smoking.
E-cigarette use has remained relatively low and stable among adult users since around 2012, although use has gone up slightly among adults recently, from 4.5% in 2021 to 6% in 2022. In e-cigarettes, tobacco combustion is replaced by e-liquid heating, leading some manufacturers to propose that e-cigarettes have less harmful respiratory effects than tobacco consumption. Other innovative features such as the adjustment of nicotine content and the choice of pleasant flavours have won over many users. Nevertheless, the safety of e-cigarette consumption and its potential as a smoking cessation method remain controversial due to limited evidence. Moreover, it has been reported that the heating process itself can lead to the formation of new decomposition compounds of questionable toxicity. Numerous in vivo and in vitro studies have been performed to better understand the impact of these new inhalable compounds on human health.

About 80 percent of Wyoming's residents live in rural areas, as much of the land area is used for farming and national parks. Researchers combed through state-by-state data from the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, an advocacy group aimed at stopping youth smoking. Since 2020, emergency department visits in Virginia by patients who said they vape jumped significantly, while visits by those who use traditional tobacco declined, according to stats from Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association.
Surgeon General’s recommendation urging those who influence youth, young adults and people who are pregnant to discourage nicotine use in any form, including e-cigarettes. The campaign works to counteract the "cost-free" mentality held by many adolescents regarding e-cigarette use, showing them how e-cigarettes, just like cigarettes, puts them at risk for addiction and other health consequences. Besides nicotine, e-cigarette aerosol can contain harmful and cancer-causing chemicals. Defective batteries have caused fires and explosions resulting in serious injuries. Nicotine salts refer to nicotine that has been dissolved in a liquid mixture that is chemically adjusted to be weakly acidic.
Freebase nicotine products can be used in refill liquids or in cartridges for closed systems. Because the brain experiences significant development during adolescence, nicotine use during this critical time can rewire the brain which can make it easier for youth to get addicted to other substances due to issues with impulse control. Again assuming a worst-case exposure of 300 puffs day–1 spread over 8 h, the levels of glyoxal exposure to a consumer would still be more than 40 times lower than the occupational exposure limit of 0.10 mg m–377,94,95. The high standard deviation for glyoxal and methylglyoxal observed in BB18 e-cigarette emissions is probably related to an analytical sample matrix effect and/or batch variability83,96,97. Despite the high standard deviation, the percentage reduction of glyoxal and methylglyoxal in both e-cigarette emissions relative to cigarette smoke was ≥ 97.0% and ≥ 94.5%, respectively (Table 3).
Among people who were currently using e‑cigarettes, the proportion of people who used them daily remained stable from 2016 (42%) to 2019 (42%), then increased in 2022–2023 (49%). While more males than females used e‑cigarettes daily, the change among females was much greater than among males, rising from 36% in 2019 to 51% in 2022–2023. This corresponds to a fourfold increase in the number of females using e‑cigarettes daily, from approximately 70,000 to 300,000 (Figure 2).
This national credential was developed for individuals who are currently coaching or aspire to coach at the interscholastic level. The goal is to enhance the ability of the coach to better serve students, the school, the community, and the profession of coaching. What we do know is that many cartridges contain nicotine, the dangerously addictive chemical found in normal cigarettes. Every provider at Loma Linda University Health can tell you how important it is to keep your lungs healthy. Our lung specialists, like Dr. Laren Tan, see patients every day who suffer from debilitating lung issues caused by smoking. Since the end of 2019, it is illegal to sell vaping products to people younger than 21 years.
Differences between schools exist, but having more students with no nicotine use showed protective associations, while having more students with positive attitudes towards product use in one’s age group increased the susceptibility. The results of the present study suggest that both interventions tailored by educational aspirations and universal school policies are needed to reach youth at high-risk of initiation. The concentration of nicotine in the BB57 emissions relative to BB18 was three times greater and followed the three-fold increase in nicotine strength of the e-liquid. In the cigarette smoke, the measured nicotine concentration of 0.23 ± 0.01 mg puff–1 (Table 1), equivalent to 2.07 ± 0.09 mg cig−1, is in accordance with the Ky1R6F certificate value of 1.9 ± 0.1 mg cig−1 (ISO Intense smoking regime)56.
In this latter regard, no differences were encountered in the frequency of tumour appearance in rats subjected to long-term (2 years) inhalation of nicotine when compared with control rats [48]. Despite the lack of carcinogenicity evidence, it has been reported that nicotine promotes tumour cell survival by decreasing apoptosis and increasing proliferation [49], indicating that it may work as a "tumour enhancer". In a very recent study, chronic administration of nicotine to mice (1 mg/kg every 3 days for a 60-day period) enhanced brain metastasis by skewing the polarity of M2 microglia, which increases metastatic tumour growth [50]. Assuming that a conventional cigarette contains 0.172–1.702 mg of nicotine [51], the daily nicotine dose administered to these animals corresponds to 40–400 cigarettes for a 70 kg-adult, which is a dose of an extremely heavy smoker.
Public health experts and tobacco researchers are trying to find out. Recycle your used vapes and pods for free with New Zealand’s first vape recycling programme. We have an exclusive range of our own brand e-liquids ideal for vapers to use all day, every day.
Susceptibility to smoking or non-combustible nicotine use is also influenced by national tobacco control policies. In Europe, Finland has been among the countries with most advanced tobacco control regulations [31]. Still, there is a large difference in smoking and snus use between students in academically and non-academically oriented education [7]. For snus, Finland follows the EU-wide sales ban but cross-border traveller imports from Sweden are permitted and an illicit market exists [32]. For e-cigarettes, comprehensive regulations were introduced in 2016 including retail sale licensing and ban for distance sales, display and advertising at point-of-sale, other flavours than tobacco and use of e-cigarettes in smoke-free places [33].
This guidance is intended to support healthcare providers in their understanding and tracking of -cigarette and vaping product use. 20% (5 million) of all youth use e-cigarettes, a 135% increase in just two years. Additional data, rates and trends can be found in the American Lung Association’s Tobacco Trends Brief.
If you’re scratching your head and wondering what @AskTSA is, it’s a small team of TSA professionals from various agency offices who answer TSA related questions from the traveling public that are sent via Twitter. You can read more about the program in this recent USA Today article. "It has become clear to me that e-cigarettes cause their own set of diseases that seem to impact just about every organ in the body—from the brain to the bladder." Critics of e-cigarettes fear that vaping will get kids hooked on nicotine and that they'll "graduate" to cigarettes when they want a bigger kick, Warner says. Vaping worked in a month, and she's been off cigarettes for more than two years. "I'm breathing, sleeping, and eating much better since I started vaping. My 'smoker's laugh' went away, and I no longer smell like an ashtray."
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court took up an e-cigarette case Tuesday, weighing Food and Drug Administration decisions blocking the marketing of sweet flavored products amid a surge in vaping by young people. Despite not authorizing a single synthetic nicotine product, it has allowed these products – including e-cigarettes in kid-friendly flavors – to stay on the market well past the July 13 deadline. There is little research on the safety of vaping in pregnancy, but it's likely to be substantially less harmful for you and your baby than smoking. Unlike cigarettes, vapes do not produce carbon monoxide, which is very harmful to a developing baby in the womb. They also cause other serious illnesses, including lung disease, heart disease and stroke.
Nearly five times as many high school students use e-cigarettes than smoke cigarettes. The particle matter (PM) that is emitted by e-cigarettes is also potentially dangerous to those who inhale it, just as passive smoking is harmful to those who share a contained space with regular smokers. Nicotine is a poison which is particularly dangerous if ingested (swallowed or inhaled) by young children which has led to poisoning and even death when swallowed by infants. It is also highly addictive and use by teenagers can have a long-term effect on the development of the brain, which continues until the age of 25 years.
Perhaps contrary to what many would expect, vaping marijuana may have as many negative health effects as nicotine-based vaping. This may have more to do with how vape liquids are processed than the THC itself. The tobacco industry profits from destroying health and is using these newer products to get a seat at the policy-making table with governments to lobby against health policies. The tobacco industry funds and promotes false evidence to argue that these products reduce harm, while at the same time heavily promoting these products to children and non-smokers and continuing to sell billions of cigarettes.
The increasing number of adolescent users and reported deaths in the United States prompted the government to ban the sale of flavoured e-cigarettes in 2020. The difference in opinion worldwide may be due to different restrictions imposed. For example, while no more than 20 ng/mL of nicotine is allowed in the EU, e-liquids with 59 mg/dL are currently available in the United States. Nevertheless, despite the national restrictions, users can easily access foreign or even counterfeit products online. Is there sufficient toxicological data on all the components employed in e-liquids?
An assessment from the agency, issued in 2008, references only a couple of studies that cover inhalation exposures—all with laboratory animals rather than people. The minimum age to purchase e-cigarettes and other tobacco products has also been raised to 21. A bill was also introduced in 2022 to raise the minimum age to purchase tobacco products and vapes from 19 to 21, but it was vetoed by Governor Mike Dunleavy.
It may also increase the risk of developing mood disorders and problems with impulse control. They appeared on the U.S. market in 2015 and are now the top-selling brand of e-cigarette in the country. Although secondhand vapor may not affect the lungs the same way as vaping, it is better to avoid it, if possible. E-cigarettes have been strongly linked to continued tobacco use and are not recommended for young people.
The "e-juice" that fills the cartridges usually contains nicotine (which is extracted from tobacco), propylene glycol, flavorings and other chemicals. Studies have found that even e-cigarettes claiming to be nicotine-free contain trace amounts of nicotine. Additionally, when the e-liquid heats up, more toxic chemicals are formed. Among youth, e-cigarettes, especially the disposable kind, are more popular than any traditional tobacco product.
This was a large increase from 2019, when only 11.3% of people had ever used e‑cigarettes, and 2.5% were currently using them (Figure 1). The proportion of people who used e‑cigarettes daily in 2022–2023 was 3.5%, rising from 1.1% in 2019. In smokers who smoke tobacco cigarettes, blood flow increased modestly after cigarette inhalation and then decreased with subsequent stress. However, with those who vaped, blood flow decreased after inhalation at rest and also after handgrip stress. Finally, lung health effects are not expected to be seen for 20 to 30 years.
Various studies suggest the vapors from e-cigarettes contain several cancer-causing substances, as well as incredibly tiny particles of tin, chromium, nickel and other heavy metals, which, in large enough concentrations, can damage the lungs. These particles likely fleck off the solder joints or metal coil in the devices when heated. Because they are so small, the tiniest bits of metal, known as nanoparticles, can travel deep into the lungs. There they could exacerbate asthma, bronchitis—an inflammation of the tubes that carry air to and from the lungs—and emphysema—a disease in which the lungs' many air sacs are destroyed, leaving patients short of breath. So far there are not enough data to say with certainty whether e-cigs worsen these disorders. E-cigarettes have a battery-operated component that heats liquid containing nicotine, flavorings, and other chemicals.
